Eco-friendly building enabling us to dream the co-existence of man and nature

Yishun, 20km north of the downtown area of Singapore, is an eco-friendly residential area full of a lake and forest unlike the downtown crowded with skyscrapers. It was August 2010 when a mega-size hospital was built in this region where the residents were relatively marginalized from medical service compared to those living in the downtown. Thanks to the technical prowess of Hyundai E&C, the third largest hospital, Khoo Teck Puat Hospital, in Singapore was built. Being recognized our technical competence including the construction of Changi General Hospital (CGH), Hyundai E&C won the contract of building Khoo Teck Puat Hospital over six leading rival companies proposing the lowest bidding cost in 2008.

The building site is 34,000㎡, gross floor area is 108,000㎡, and the total number of beds is 550. It has three buildings with 6 to 10 stories above ground and 2 basement levels. The construction cost is USD 310 million.

Eco-friendly hospital built with the hope of local people

Hyundai E&C dispatched various eco-friendly factors from the planning stage. Khoo Teck Puat Hospital was equipped with a facility system could reduce energy consumption itself let alone energy saving. The most noticeable part was the maximized use of solar energy by introducing natural lighting and reflected light into a patient room. With the installation of a heat pump, we increased the waste heat utilization through air recycling by turning the cold air into a courtyard emitted from an operating room. We also installed a system using the lake and rainwater in front of the hospital as landscaping water. Furthermore, we achieved organic convergence with an exterior space including the local community by removing the hospital fence with the use of landscaping plants.

Currently, Khoo Teck Puat Hospital is considered as a hospital equipped with a “healing-friendly” environment since it is located close to Yishun Lake unlike most large general hospitals dense in the downtown. Being recognized for the technical capability in applying eco-friendly factors to design and material including eleven gardens, Khoo Teck Puat Hospital received the Building and Construction Authority (BCA) Green Mark Platinum Award in 2011 and BCA Construction Excellence Award in 2012. Green Mark is a green building certification.
