[Job Interview] Design

Q Please tell us about your job.

According to the purpose, design work is divided into “bidding design” for projects and “execution design,” which enhances the completion of the ordered project. As a process safety engineer, I determine and improve the process risks of bidding projects and create bidding and execution designs. I also coordinate projects for their safe construction, and if necessary, attend meetings of the ordering company or design firm. Securing the economic feasibility and safety of design based on design VE (Value Engineering) is the core of our work.

*Design VE: The process of reviewing functional improvement and cost reduction by analyzing the economics and feasibility at the design stage.

Q When was the most rewarding moment during your work?

This is by far the first time the project was successful. It was even more rewarding because it was achieved by all the team members in the relevant departments working together for several months.

Q What kind of competencies do you think you need to do your job?

For design work, the collaboration between individuals, teams, and departments is key. Since the roles and responsibilities of each job are all different, smooth communication is essential for the job to proceed smoothly. When working on a project, problems may arise in unexpected places. They can be resolved easily, depending on how you communicate in this process.

In addition, language proficiency is essential. Most plant projects are conducted overseas. English proficiency is important because reviewing and writing documents, discussions, and meetings with the client are all conducted in English.

Q Is there a corporate culture of Hyundai E&C that you are very proud of?

We have a proud “work-and-life balance” system. There is Family Day on the second and fourth Fridays and planned annual leaves. On Family Day, you can leave work at 5 pm and enjoy a longer evening than usual. You can spend more time with family, or if you’re single, enjoy hobbies or use it for self-development. The planned annual leave system allows you to register your annual leave on the desired date so you can automatically use the leaves without the superior approval. It is Hyundai E&C’s corporate culture to both work and relax hard.

Q Could you say a word to juniors who dream of working at Hyundai E&C?

I’d say, “Sincerity does not betray.” As you take the steps necessary to find a job, you will find your own strengths. I prepared for two years to join our company. I believe that the efforts and sincerity are what led to good results. If everyone who dreams of joining us strives hard genuinely, I’m sure you will be successful.
