"It is important to know your priorities clearly and to set clear principles."
by Manager Jang Dae-gyu (Purification of Complex Contaminated Soil in Camp Market, Business Support Team)
Q. Please tell us about your job.
I work as a member of the on-site business support team. I am in charge of on-site financial management and various support tasks for construction performance. To list detailed tasks, I work on cashier management to manage deposits and withdrawals at the site, working with the headquarters to report business plans and performance, subcontract management in charge of contracts, delinquency, and payment for partners, and labor management of employees and partners. Since my site is a joint contracting site, I take care of cost allocation and monitoring to joint contractors.
Q When was the most rewarding moment during your work?
The greatest reward is that I have a lot of authority to exercise under my responsibility. Compared to the total number of employees at large construction sites, we have fewer employees at Hyundai E&C. In particular, the business support team is in the position to make important on-site decisions. The management staff in the construction support division has the authority to settle all expenses executed on site. We have a strong sense of ownership when we decide whether something is necessary at our site and contribute to reducing costs by suggesting better solutions.
Q What kind of competencies do you think you need to do your job?
Management positions must have a firm sense of business principles. Most of the time, you will come across a request for something, and they are usually all necessary on site. In this case, you need to set priorities. It would be best if you also worked with a sense of ownership. In recent years, the business support team’s boundaries, which used to be divided into managerial and public service, have broken down, requiring integrated competencies. You must be actively involved in technical work and instead of dwelling only on internal matters, also pay attention to external issues. For instance, when there is a civil complaint due to scattering dust or noise, instead of only reporting the matter internally, we need to maintain a continuous relationship with the complainant. Instilling a positive image of Hyundai E&C among residents in nearby areas is also a good attitude as a management staff.
Q Is there a corporate culture of Hyundai E&C that you are very proud of?
Hyundai E&C has a culture that grants a lot of authority on individuals. No matter how standardized and systemized, all decisions must be made by humans. When reporting to decision-makers, working-level staff do extensive research and prepare accurate data. This is because decision-makers respect the opinions of working-level staff. As there are so many issues to be resolved and decided, the decision-maker trusts the working staff and makes quick decisions. This culture is possible because we are in the construction industry, and especially at Hyundai E&C. As you witness the process of how the issues you have contemplated become the decisions of the company, then the company’s performance, you start to build your capacity and perceive issues with the mind of the management. Once you observe how much you grow, you will not regret joining Hyundai E&C.
Q Could you say a word to juniors who dream of working at Hyundai E&C?
I have been working for five years at the headquarters and two years on site. The site is the foundation of Hyundai E&C. Since the site is project-based, when one site begins and ends, another site emerges. As we are in the order-taking industry, it is difficult to predict where and what projects will be created. If you dream of working at Hyundai E&C, you must be someone who enjoys this uncertainty. Management positions, especially in civil engineering, construction, and plant sites, can be relocated anywhere. Creating a team with new people in a new place cannot be accomplished with talent alone. It must be aligned with your disposition. If you don’t like change, or if you don’t like improvised and spontaneous situations, Hyundai E&C isn’t a place for you. However, if you enjoy change and innovation, this is the perfect place where you can work with a sense of accomplishment.
