Hyundai E&C Develops Korea’s First Odor Management System “HOMS”

Hyundai E&C, for the first time in Korea, has developed HOMS(Hyundai Odor Management System) for environmental facilities such as food waste treatment plants, sewage treatment plants. 


HOMS enables a real-time management of odor concentrations inside and at the site borders of environmental facilities, preventing the spread of odor to nearby areas. It is an “air-contitioning control system for odorous sites using complex odor information”, which has already completed its patent filing in June this year. 


The conventional complex odor detection sensors measure, synthesize and then express each and every odorous substance based on individual odor-specific sensors. Measuring all hundreds and thousands of odorous substances requires many expensive sensors, making it difficult to measure different odors in and out of facilities.  


The Hyundai-developed HOMS is based on a proprietary algorithm, capable of expressing complex odors by room based solely on five types of sensor measurements including temperature, humidity, ammonia, hydrogen sulfide, VOCs. It is not required to have numerous sensors specific to each odor, resulting in huge cost reduction compared to conventional complex odor sensors and allowing for effective monitoring of numerous indoor spaces at same cost.   


HOMS applies differential pressure control technology. It leverages the property of air flowing from high pressure to low pressure, increasing air pressure in odorless rooms while reducing air pressure in odorous areas to facilitate the capture of odor preventing its external emission.  


HOMS is being field tested at “Chungju Food Bio Energy Center” which was constructed by Hyundai E&C in 2016 and is currently participating as a research management institution. In this 10,716㎡ facility, with daily capacity of 80t, HOMS has proven to be very effective for odor management and is expected to expand its applications to other environmental facilities in the future.
