Hyundai E&C Launches Winter Site Safety Inspection Relay Campaign

Hyundai E&C is bolstering its high-intensity safety management practices through a 'Winter Site Safety Inspection Relay Campaign' to prevent accidents on construction sites during the cold season, while also significantly increasing the number of safety management personnel and expanding the scope of support for its partner companies to implement more effective safety protocols.

Hyundai E&C announced that on Wednesday, December 3rd, it conducted a 'Construction Site Safety Inspection Relay Campaign in Preparation for Winter' at HILLSTATE Lagoon Interas (Phase 2) in Ansan-si and HILLSTATE The Wave City in Siheung-si, both in Gyeonggi Province.

This campaign was organized as part of the ‘Accident Prevention Week,’ following the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport's plan for a winter preparation relay campaign. The goal is to prevent falls and cold-weather incidents that can occur at construction sites. Hyundai E&C is actively participating in the winter campaign, which will continue until February of next year. The first week of December has been designated as a special awareness week, during which the company is concentrating on a range of accident prevention activities, including CEO site visits and safety inspections, winter safety education, banner installations, and joint labor-management inspections.

During the event, Hyundai E&C CEO Lee Han-Woo personally visited the sites, inspecting safety facilities and working environments, and emphasized the importance of safety to employees, encouraging their voluntary participation.

Hyundai E&C plans to intensify site inspections across all domestic projects currently under construction, focusing on factors specific to winter weather, such as the potential for slippage on railings and temporary structures, areas prone to freezing and icing, and equipment with fire or asphyxiation risks. For high-risk work, the company is reinforcing pre-inspection procedures to proactively prevent hazards. In addition, it is increasing the sites' resilience to winter conditions by implementing specialized seasonal measures, such as adjusting working conditions based on outside temperature changes and checking heating and insulation equipment.

Hyundai E&C runs a ‘Winter 3GO Program’ to prevent cold-related illnesses among on-site workers. Safety management measures focusing on the cold season are being intensified, including providing heated vests and hot packs to workers on outdoor sites and those sensitive to cold-related ailments, and installing hot water piping and heating facilities and granting workers additional breaks.

The company has also established its own resting standards, which exceed statutory requirements based on cold wave warning levels. It operates an outdoor work protocol that determines the degree of cold-related illness risk and activates a response system that prioritizes worker health protection, including adjusting or suspending work based on the intensity of the cold wave.

In addition to robust prevention-focused activities targeted at protecting the safety and health of construction site workers, support to enhance the safety management capabilities and effectiveness of partner companies is being expanded at scale.

Hyundai E&C plans to improve its partners’ safety management capabilities by expanding safety manager deployment to include projects below KRW 10 billion in value (for which there is no legal mandate) and by deploying additional personnel in projects valued at KRW 30 billion or more. Additionally, the company will be standardizing detailed experience and qualification requirements for different work disciplines and project sizes. Under these revised standards, a 1,000-unit residential construction site, for example, can increase its safety manager deployment from the previous three individuals to a maximum of 16, and the scope of application for different work disciplines will be tailored more meticulously to each site's unique characteristics.

Hyundai E&C has also raised the standards of its safety and health management system to the highest level for all domestic sites. The company is currently focusing on creating a safe workplace by devising effective on-site mitigation measures, including boosting targeted oversight of high-risk work and increasing investment in safety equipment.

A Hyundai E&C official stated, “‘The 24x7 Safety Patrol Team’ proactively inspects and addresses on-site hazards to further strengthen the safety management system. We are doing everything possible to enhance comprehensive safety management practices by expanding the smart safety system and safety support programs for our partners.” The official added, “In accordance with national safety promotion policies, all executives and employees, including senior management, are concentrating their efforts on preventing industrial site accidents on a fundamental level. We plan to continuously raise the essential safety standards of construction sites through effective and systematic measures.”

Hyundai E&C plans to drive a paradigm shift in construction safety through ongoing institutional improvements and an expansion of support for related measures. At the same time, it will also concentrate on establishing a self-regulatory safety culture where people on site can identify and respond to risks, demonstrating its commitment to creating a secure environment where work can proceed with confidence.
