A new plant construction history made by Hyundai E&C

Qatar the world’s third-largest natural gas reserves was proceeding various complex development projects with its enormous oil money. Hyundai E&C lifted up its head in competition with other leading global construction companies participated in the large-scale GTL(Gas-To-Liquid) construction project. It was ordered by the global energy powerhouse Qatar for the first time as a Korean construction company in 2006.

Spread the technical competence of Hyundai E&C to the world

The GTL process means a high added value plant project generating liquid products including ultra-low sulfur diesel and naphtha, LNG, condensate (super light crude oil) from the natural gas obtained through offshore drilling.

Hyundai E&C won the large-scale GTL contract as the first Korean construction company in 2006. The GTL5 ordered by global energy company Royal Dutch Shell was a mega project whose construction cost was amounted to USD 1.3 billion.

The GTL5 project was consisted of a total of 8 packages. The Liquid Processing Unit (LPU) taken by Hyundai E&C was a facility refining synthetic oil to a sellable product, the three main processes along with Feed Gas Preparation (FGP) and GTL.

Brought the best effects with effective site management

Hyundai E&C took the lead in effectively conducting construction and managing process by applying Hyundai Piping Material Control System (HPMAC) developed by ourselves. With the HPMAC, if the values in a drawing were entered, all details required in construction including the number of workforce, the amount of construction material, and supply time of material needed in a particular process come out, assisting us to proceed construction efficiently without errors. Moreover, it enabled people to figure out the construction progress just at a glance by informing all processes to the ordering organization and constructor in real time.

From the commencement of construction, Hyundai E&C led the entire construction by recording the top in the process rate. We demonstrated the potential energy of Hyundai E&C and Koreans in the GTL site in terms of quality by being ranked top in “Site Technical Assurance Review (STAR).” Audit performed by the ordering organization among global leading construction companies engaged in the Pearl GTL construction site in the first half of 2009.

Receiving the highest praise from the ordering organization and competitors throughout the entire process including construction·safety·quality management, the GTL site was completed in November 2011. Currently, the GTL site produces 140,000 barrels of clean fuel per day, accounting for about 3% of the entire global diesel market.
