The Hanbit Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) Units 1-6, formerly known as Yeonggwang NPP, were constructed by Hyundai E&C over a span of 20 years and account for 6% of South Korea’s electricity production as of 2022. Like Kori Units 3 and 4, Hanbit Units 1 and 2 were built in split contracts, each with a capacity of 950MW. Hyundai E&C expanded its domestic technology applications at Hanbit Units 1 and 2, extending from civil engineering and construction into electrical and mechanical systems.

In November 1987, Hyundai E&C was selected as the sole contractor for Hanbit Units 3 and 4. The company’s commitment to technical cooperation with leading international firms was evident in this project. Hanbit Units 3 and 4 were the first domestically-led projects where foreign companies were only involved in areas where the technology was not yet fully developed. This effort was key to the creation of the first Korean Standardized Nuclear Reactor (KSNR), Hanul Units 3 and 4.

The construction of Hanbit Units 5 and 6 focused on addressing issues identified during the construction and operation of KSNR Unit 1. Hyundai E&C, leveraging its accumulated experience and technology, built advanced nuclear power plants, enhancing both the economic efficiency and safety of the plants while improving the performance of KSNR.
